After 15 years of careful planning, the University Children’s Hospital Zurich, a healthcare institution with over 160 years of history, has opened the doors to its new state-of-the-art children's hospital in Zurich. The facility, which welcomed its first patients in November 2024, includes a pioneering research center focused on accelerating treatments for children's diseases. This transformative project represents years of navigating healthcare regulations and securing funding, resulting in a facility that's setting new standards for pediatric care.
We talked to Adnan Jakupovic, Application Manager, about the role of Joan in this project and he told us this story.
When Outlook just doesn't cut it anymore
The hospital's old system for room management was not ideal. "If you needed to know who's in a room, you’d have to open Outlook, check the booking system – it was a whole process," says Jakupovic.
They knew they needed something better for their new space. The wishlist was pretty straightforward: it had to integrate with Outlook, make room booking a breeze, and show reservation details right at the door. Simple enough, right? Through a tender process, Joan entered the picture.
Breaking tradition: The open-space hospital
Here's where things get interesting. The Children’s Hospital is doing something pretty revolutionary in healthcare: they're going open-plan. No more traditional doctors' offices tucked away in corners. Instead, they're creating shared spaces that any doctor can use. Think of it as hot-desking but for healthcare professionals.
To make this work, they needed a robust system to enter hundreds of Joan devices for the medical treatment rooms and meeting spaces. "Everyone will work in the open space," Jakupovic explains. "Doctors can do their admin work anywhere in the hospital." It's all about flexibility and collaboration.
Joan 13 simplifying room management
At Children’s Hospital Kispi, the Joan 13 devices are transforming daily operations by streamlining scheduling and communication. Mounted outside rooms and departments, these e-ink displays show real-time availability for consultations, procedures, and staff shifts, helping the medical team stay organized and avoid confusion. The best part? The Joan 13 devices sync with tools like Microsoft Outlook and Google Calendar, displaying up-to-date schedules and preventing booking conflicts.
Cloud innovation meets hospital infrastructure
One of the hospital’s key technical challenges was integrating Joan's cloud-based platform with their on-premises server. Through comprehensive documentation and dedicated support from Joan's team, what could have been a complex integration became straightforward. "The support from Joan was excellent," Jakupovic shares. "Now everything works seamlessly."
Why the hospital team is falling for Joan
Sometimes the simplest things make a difference. The staff loves that they can book rooms right on the spot – no more laptop-hunting just to grab a quick meeting space. And those sleek, minimalist displays? They fit right in with the hospital’s modern vibe. As Jakupovic puts it, "The minimalistic design matches our special architecture perfectly."
A hospital that works smarter
The Children’s Hospital is reimagining how healthcare spaces can work. With hundreds of Joan devices throughout the facility, they're making life easier for the people who matter most – the medical staff who work tirelessly to help kids get better.
It's proof that when you combine great healthcare with smart technology, everybody wins. And that's what we call a success story in modern healthcare.
